Conservation of the movement of the musical longcase clock in the Bucket Hall

Musical longcase clock, the pinned drum playing a choice of 7 tunes on 10 bells, striking the hour on a single bell, playing the selected tune on the hour (Possibly on the half hour as well, but this is not known at present).

EDWARD HARRISON, WARRINGTON

There are two heavy cast iron weights for the going and striking trains and an extremely heavy and long lead weight for the musical train.

Tunes are listed and can be selected on the silvered dial:

  1. ‘Minute by Handle’ (sic)
  2. ‘The Lass of Patties Mill’
  3. ‘Air by Mudge’
  4. ‘Something elce (sic) to do’
  5. ‘Miss Bakers Hornpipe’
  6. ‘104 Psalm’

The mechanisms of these clocks are well engineered, hence their survival after 200 plus years. They are robust, although the brass plate holes which accommodate the steel pinion ends will eventually distort due to the continuous friction of steel on the softer brass. These sometimes need to be drilled out and replaced to prevent damage to the mechanism leading to inaccurate time keeping.

The dismantling, cleaning repairing and reassembly of the movement needs great expertise now this is completed it will prolong the active life of the clock and provide an regular musical interlude to liven up the Bucket Hall!
